I've taught college-level chemistry for almost 40 years, most of that at Johnson C, Smith University, where I serve as a full Professor and Department Chair. Much of my research has been in teaching and learning science. I have tutored extensively, both face-to-face and online. I have a doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado and my Bachelor of Science degree is from UNC-Chapel Hill.
My focus is on understanding the problems students encounter in learning science and how to make difficult concepts easier for students to learn. I have served as an AP Chemistry Reader (2011-present), a Journal of Chemical Education feature Editor (1989-2009), a regional Chemistry Olympiad coordinator (2009-present) and Science Olympiad Regional Director (2000-2010). This experience helps me diagnose the problems a student is having and help them break through their barriers.
A typical session will have the student and me practicing solving problems typical of chemistry tests they may encounter. Occasionally, students may want a mini-lecture on a topic as well. Online sessions simply move the piece of paper we normally work on to a OneNote notebook we share virtually and discuss using Zoom. Students leave with a set of notes they can refer to later as they do homework and study for exams.
Every student has unique needs for support. Tell me more about what you are hoping a tutor can do for you, and I will start on a plan to help you get what you need.
